Editor’s Note
Remember when Halloween was so scary, exciting, and delicious? It’s obvious that Tina does. This piece brings back so many memories!I have a twin brother and we couldn’t wait until we were allowed to trick-or-treat at night… after dark. We went our separate ways once out the door of our house— he with a gang of boys who wrapped trees in toilet paper, threw eggs at houses and young, scared trick-or-treaters, and otherwise marauded the neighborhood until it was time to go home. Clearly they were into the trick part of this equation. I, on the other hand, along with my best friend Kathy, was more interested in our costumes, the comments we received when we rang the bell, and the treats. One year Kathy and I were the only ones brave enough to enter the gate in front of Mrs. Homilan’s yard. It was haunted we were sure—overgrown, with huge shadows of tree branches dancing as the October winds blew. The imposing, old 1955 Buick Roadmaster was in the driveway, and as far as we could tell, never moved. We walked up to the front door holding hands with hearts pounding and rang the bell… and waited for what seemed like a long time. We were about to turn to leave when she opened the door— in her hands were two full-size Baby Ruth bars and a quarter for each of us. She said, “I’m so happy you came to trick-or-treat.” And we thanked her, unable to contain our biggest smiles. That was a Halloween I still remember clearly. Times seemed simple then.
