Emerging Writer Contest 4!

Calling All Writers.

Original Stories Written by Hummingbird Readers

(And YOU vote on your favorite!)

Hummingbird is excited to once again provide the opportunity for an emerging author to be published—possibly YOU! We began the Hummingbird Emerging Writer contests in 2018 followed by a gap during and since the Pandemic. But it is BACK, and we are pleased to announce our fourth Emerging Writer Contest.

We invite you to submit your original story or essay. If you are the final winner, your story will be published and promoted on Hummingbird.

By Contest 3, the Emerging Writer Contest posts grew in readership to be among Hummingbird’s leading posts. We had many entries, including international emerging writers, and the associated pages were accessed by several hundred readers. The quality of the entries was excellent. If you have always wanted to have your work published and to expand your circle of supportive readers, we encourage you to participate! We expect the number of entries to continue increasing with each contest and on behalf of Hummingbird, we wholeheartedly welcome you.

Contest Details.

  • Your story (or essay) must incorporate an attribute of "summer" in the manner of your choosing—thematic, subject, literary device, setting, etc. Example: “Tiny droplets hung in the still night air making it hard to breathe. ‘Close,’ as my proper Southern Granny used to say.”

  • Up to 350 words.

  • Must have a title.

  • You may submit up to 2 stories (or essays) per contest.

  • The top 2 entries will be chosen by a panel of Hummingbird authors. The stories are read “blind,” in that the author is not divulged to the judges.

  • The 2 semi-finalists will be featured on the HBP so that Hummingbird Readers can vote on their favorite.

The winning author, based on Hummingbird audience vote, will be invited to submit an original story of their choosing for future publication on Hummingbird on an agreed upon date. The short story or essay can have up to 450 words. The story or essay must be approved for publication by the publisher.
